Tess Snaden - The Wrappings
Tess Snaden is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist based in Scotland, U.K. She works primarily with sculpture, drawing from a diverse range of subject matter that spans childhood memories, domestic objects, spaces, places, and portraiture.
Tess studied Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada. Her practice focuses primarily on communicating the more subterranean human experiences. She is interested in how we express unexplainable feelings and memories. This interest comes from a long history of Snaden resorting to mark-making to find clarity in chaos.
In her series titled ‘The Wrappings’, Tess utilises the meditative nature of handicraft to create calming colour-scapes using thread while playing with colour theory and the language of weaving. A majority of the pieces move in one direction, either horizontally (weft) or vertically (warp). Whereas in others, you’ll find intersecting threads creating a seam and a pattern relating to woven fabric. In this series, Tess uses re-purposed yarn, discarded wood and time to explore notions of faith in repetition, colour theory and the deconstruction of failure, which in turn brings up the freedom of play in making.
Join us to meet the Artist and for complimentary light refreshments & nibbles, 12-3pm Saturday 30th August.
